Munger Park 1948 Fortunately for the Mongrels the Garden Café opened in the first years of the 21st Century across the street from our adopted football field that is Munger Park. Half a century earlier we would cross the street from games in the park to Blackie's Ice House to gather, drink soft drinks and eat junk. The ice house was located on what is now the west side of the parking lot for the café. The east side of the parking lot is where Rudi's house was located when he joined our group in 1949. The Garden Café is located where the bakery stood at mid-century.
The opening of the café occurred about the same time the Mongrels were growing closer together after splintering into small units. By 2004 we began monthly meetings at the café that including the writing of a book on our time in Munger Place at mid-century. Dale Wootten, the owner, and his staff have offered us the hospitality and the many amenities that make the café exceptional.
The Garden Cafe Today The café offers fresh organic foods from their garden along with ever changing art on the walls. It is referred to as an urban oasis as well as a secret garden. These metaphors come from its off the mainstream location in the middle of the city but off of the main thoroughfares.
The block of commercial buildings that house the café was built in the early twenties as a shopping area for Munger Place when it was a walkable community.
