Munger Park
Three short blocks from the Munger Esplanade by the Michell porch was a small park bordered by a row of red brick retail buildings that were part of the walkable community laid out by the Mungers.
Munger park provided the Mongrels with a better field for the football games as the esplanade where we practiced was only twenty-five feet wide at best.
The stores offered the adults convenient shopping, the mongrel hound free donuts and the Mongrels the ice house to hang out after football games as well as a place to visit at night for cokes and snacks. A likeable old guy (probably 40) named Blackie ran the ice house and we loved to banter and tease him and for him to harass us. The almost nightly visits became an important part of life for several years as we grew up.
Some fifty years later The Garden Café that stands in place of the old bakery and Blackie’s Ice House has offered us a nostalgic place to regroup. It was here in the shadow of lovable old Blackie and our noble hound we were able to write our Coming of Age at Mid-Century book.
