We were proud to have numbered plays rather than to draw the plays in the dirt between downs as was done by other sandlot teams. Joe was the coach who organized our team then brought the method of numbering and calling plays. He coached all of the teams including baseball and basketball. We were a part of the small silent generation without the adult leadership of later generations. By developing our own games and social endeavors, no matter how bleak, we were the better for it because we did it ourselves.
